Does this sound like you?
- I’ve tried everything, but I just can’t seem to swing the racket faster.
- I often beat players who hit harder than me.
- If I could unlock effortless velocity, my level would skyrocket.
Somewhere in your swing, your elastic mechanics are failing you. It’s possible it’s at the hand – your hitting action itself is insufficient, and we’ll help you with that.
For many, it’s upstream, at the chest and the shoulder. An explosive forehand requires pressing the racket around the body in a semi-circle, using the pecs. Not only that, but the entire shoulder blade, not just the arm itself, needs to glide around the body for an effective swing. So many players, even at the highest level are missing this pecs/shoulder activation, and it’s sapping their power.
Lastly, in order to fix the above, it’s possible you’ll need to probe the ball differently than you have been, likely giving yourself much more lateral space than you’re used to. The explosive version of the swing is inside-out, in a semi-circle, not linear, back-to-front through the ball. This requires a certain orientation before you swing to work, and many players habitually set up wrong for it. Inside, we’ve got simple explanations and drills you can use to learn and practice optimal spacing for yourself.
